The third generation Toyota Prius has achieved the maximum 5-star vehicle safety rating in the latest 2009 Euro NCAP test results. Achieving an overall score of 83%, Prius is the third Toyota model to be granted a 5-star rating this year, after the new Toyota Avensis and iQ.

The new Prius carries over the safety credentials of the previous generation, which also achieved the maximum 5-star rating for occupant safety protection in 2004.

This achievement highlights Toyota's engineering capabilities in developing a vehicle chassis, which delivers strong environmental, dynamic and safety performance.

The new Prius is equipped with upgraded active, passive and pedestrian impact safety features. Every Prius model now comes fitted with an impact absorbing body shell, seven airbags and active headrests.

The Electronically-Controlled Braking (ECB) system incorporates Brake Assist (BA), Traction Control (TRC) and Vehicle Stability Control+ (VSC+). The new Prius is also available with a new pre-emptive, Pre-Crash Safety System (PCS), incorporating Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

The new Prius, which is currently being launched in Europe, has generated more than 17,000 customer orders since June and is due to be launched in Ireland in early October.

An Irish Dealer has scooped the top honour at Toyota's European Ichiban Customer Satisfaction Awards during a ceremony held last night at the company's regional headquarters in Brussels. Walsh's from Kilkenny was recognised for delivering outstanding customer satisfaction taking into account both Sales and After Sales performance. A total of 37 awards were presented to Dealers from across 27 markets in recognition of the exceptional contribution each business is making to Toyota's sales and marketing strategy in Ireland and Europe.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Tadashi Arashima, Chief Executive Officer and President of Toyota Motor Europe (TME) said: "An important measure of business success is customer loyalty. Our goal remains unchanged: we aim to be number one in Complete Customer Satisfaction in every Toyota market. I am personally delighted to see a year-on-year improvement in both the quantity and quality of entrants."

Roughly 2,500 Toyota Dealers were judged on the results of an annual customer satisfaction survey introduced by TME in 2006. Award nominees made the shortlist based on exceptional performance across seven categories both pre- and post-sale. For example, the winners were judged to have exceeded customer expectation in areas such as showroom welcome, test drives, and handover. They were also assessed on the accuracy and punctuality of service delivery, plus general follow-up and overall customer care.

Since TME's annual Ichiban Awards kicked off three years ago, scores for Complete Customer Satisfaction in Toyota markets have improved by some 16% in Sales and 10% in After Sales. "Ichiban" is a Japanese word borrowed from "Okyakusama Ichiban" which means "Customer First". "Ichiban" means "first" or "number one".

Toyota scoops green accolade for the 2nd year running

Toyota has retained its position as greenest vehicle manufacturer according to a study conducted by Business Car magazine.

For the second year running, the top 20 fleet manufacturers were rated and ranked based on survey results and other research by Clean Green Cars (www.cleangreencars.co.uk) on the various attributes and achievements of each brand. Scores were weighted to allow for sales volume to give a true comparison of large and small brands. Toyota was top-rated with a score of 86 per cent.

Commenting on the announcement, David Shannon, Managing Director of Toyota Ireland said:

"This award is testament to the leadership demonstrated by Toyota in the development of Hybrid Synergy Drive in models such as Prius, as well as, Toyota Optimal Drive Advanced Engines, which are designed to maximise fuel efficiency and minimise C02 emissions across Toyota's entire range of passenger vehicles."

Student Power at the DIT Toyota Fashion Show

The DIT Toyota Fashion Show set Vicar Street alight with a mixture of colourful and cutting edge designs, and topped off by a showcase of eight outfits created by student designers from all over Ireland.

Jean Melia from Wicklow won the DIT Toyota Student Design Award.  The Grafton Academy student's design entitled "Tribal Armour" beat off stiff competition from seven other finalists all from NCAD.  The theme for the DIT Toyota Fashion Show was "Tribal expression – the urban theory." Jean Melia took the element of indigenous peoples as her main influence in designing her outfit, in particular native American peoples and their traditional folkwear.

Meanwhile, the female student model of the year was awarded to DIT student Suzie McAdam from Castletroy, Limerick and the male student model of the year was awarded to Troy Tyson from Salthill, Galway who both won contracts with top agency First Options. 

Now in its sixth year and organised entirely by 70 students from DIT, the DIT Toyota Fashion Show incorporated models, stylists, breakdancers, and jugglers All proceeds from the event will go to Teenline Ireland, the non-judgemental listening agency.

According to show co-director and DIT marketing student Anna O'Sullivan, "We were thrilled with the big turnout and the show certainly had that wow factor and all the hard work and late nights paid off.  This has been a real, practical learning curve for every student involved and one of the most challenging and rewarding projects we've ever done.  The practical experience we've gained in event management, budgeting, marketing, sales, leadership and team work should give us the edge when looking for a real job in years to come.  Also, it's great to support Maureen Bolger and all the team at Teenline which is always there for students like us."

Toyota iQ and Avensis receive 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating

On February 18th, Euro NCAP introduced a new rating scheme aimed at delivering a more accurate assessment of the overall safety performance of the vehicle tested. Three crash test awards have been replaced by just one, which focuses on the vehicle's overall protection performance.

Historically, Toyota models have performed well in the Euro NCAP individual safety assessment, delivering a good, well-balanced overall performance. The new Avensis and iQ have reinforced this trend by being awarded 5-star ratings in the newly established 2009 Euro NCAP safety assessment.

The new Euro NCAP rating scheme score is based on an overall weighted score combining adult (50%), child (20%) and pedestrian (20%) protection assessment results with the availability of driver assistance devices (10%). A minimum score of 70% overall is necessary to achieve a 5-star rating.

The new Avensis' overall weighted score of 81% highlights the new Toyota's comprehensive levels of active and passive safety technology.

Despite its exceptionally compact, urban-friendly dimensions, the iQ makes no compromises in the fields of active and passive safety, achieving a remarkable overall weighted score of 79%. Every iQ features, fitted as standard, 9 airbags -including a world-first, rear window curtain shield airbag, Anti-lock Brakes (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control.

Prius affordable to run with capped-price Servicing

Running Toyota's petrol-electric hybrid, all-new third-generation Prius is affordable - and not only because it has the equal lowest fuel consumption figures in Australia.

Prius is covered by Toyota Service Advantage's capped-price servicing, meaning each of the six standard scheduled services costs just $130 for each service over the first three years or 60,000km of driving (whichever comes first)*.

Matthew Callachor, senior divisional manager for Toyota sales and marketing says new Prius owners benefit from low-cost servicing, fuel consumption of 3.9 litres per kilometre^ and a huge increase in vehicle technology.

"All-new Prius is packed with the most advanced technology of any Toyota vehicle, including a newly developed Hybrid Synergy Drive system.

"More than 40 years of Toyota engineering and innovation has culminated in this third-generation Prius, which has had more than 1000 new patents filed against its nameplate.

"However, owners pay the same price to service Prius as they would a Yaris or Corolla with Toyota Service Advantage.

Toyota joins Bates for Rally OZ Assault

Toyota Australia will join forces with four-time Australian Rally Champion Neal Bates for a one-off appearance at next month's Repco Rally Australia, the Down Under round of the World Rally Championship (WRC).

Bates and long-time co-driver Coral Taylor will pilot their Neal Bates Motorsport (NBM) Toyota Corolla in the production car (PWRC) component of the event.

Along with support from Toyota, Bates and Taylor will be backed by CarsGuide and the Melanoma Foundation.

The announcement will see the champions make their 10th appearance in the local round of the WRC, which is being staged for the first time on the east coast in the Tweed and Kyogle Shires of the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales.

"Being able to contest Rally Australia in a car that this team has designed and built will be a truly special experience," Bates said.

"It is great to team up with Toyota again. Their support has allowed us to enter this round and I hope we can put on a good show for a car they played such a central role in developing.

"We are still awaiting the final rubber stamp from the FIA on homologation of the Corolla, but everything is progressing well and I expect we will be able to confirm we have received it in the very near future.

"It has been eight years since Coral and I competed in Rally Australia and we are looking forward to seeing how our Corolla S2000 compares to the best cars in the world."

Toyota motorsport manager Wayne Gabriel said the return of Rally Australia and the finalising of homologation presented the ideal opportunity to showcase the Corolla S2000 on the world stage.

"We felt the return of WRC to our shores and the impending homologation announcement was the ideal time to join with Neal and his team and help promote the Corolla S2000 to the world," Gabriel said.

"Toyota has been in partnership with Neal for 20 years and we wish him and the team all the best as they fly the flag for Australia against the world's best."

NBM will support a second Corolla S2000 entry in Rally Australia that will be piloted by local driver Stewart Reid, who will run in the invitational section of the PWRC.

Repco Rally Australia runs from 3 September to 6 September and gets underway on the Thursday with two runs across the Tweed Super Special Stage in Murwillumbah.

Toyota has beefed up its LandCruiser 70 Series workhorses with improved passive safety, comfort and features.

The seven-model 70 Series range of cab-chassis, troop carrier and wagon models has driver and front passenger airbags as standard equipment.

LandCruiser 70 Series safety upgrades also include an extended front bumper to accommodate airbag requirements and warning lamps for the airbags and driver's seatbelt.

Prices for these and other features have been increased by just $600* or around one per cent for each model.

The range starts from $57,640* for the cab-chassis, $58,540* for the wagon and $64,540* for the troop carrier. Option prices remain unchanged.

Comfort and convenience improvements begin with newly adopted telescopic steering column adjustment and a new four-spoke urethane steering wheel.

The audio system has been completely revised.

LandCruiser 70 now has a wider (200mm) double DIN head unit with AM/FM tuner, single CD with MP3 capability, USB input that also allows full iPod®^ control, and a 3.5mm audio input jack.

It also offers Bluetooth™** hands-free telephone capability and Bluetooth™ audio streaming with compatible products.

The workhorse LandCruiser dashboard has been improved with a face-lifted appearance, revised instrument cluster and the addition of a bottle holder next to the gear-shift lever.

Interior upgrades also include new fabric Bluish Gray or Oak trim for GXL models.

The exterior colour choices are French Vanilla, Sandy Taupe and Midnight Blue on all models plus Silver Pearl, Graphite, Merlot Red and Vintage Gold on the Cab Chassis and wagon.

LandCruiser 76 five-seat wagon variants now have a moulded roof lining for added head clearance and increased comfort, as well a resin garnish on the front pillar and header.

The front-passenger assist grip has been moved to the A pillar.

LandCruiser 70 Series models have a new sun visor design.

All models are powered by a turbocharged and intercooled high-pressure injection V8 diesel engine.

The 4.5-litre engine, which meets Euro IV emission standards, delivers 151kW of power at 3400rpm.

Peak torque of 430Nm is reached at just 1200rpm and held all the way to 3200rpm - the flattest torque curve among all of Toyota's engines.

It is matched to five-speed manual transmission and two-speed transfer.

The V8 engine's performance does not come at the expense of fuel economy - just 11.5 litres/100km^^ for cab-chassis models and 11.9 litres/100km^^ for the wagons and troop carriers.

Recent news from England has indicated that the Land Rover LRX Concept vehicle will be debuting in 2010 with full production starting in 2011, and considering the genius of this concept, it’s about time.  The LRX, which may end up being branded a Range Rover when it hit dealerships in early 2011, was first shown off at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2008 and represents an evolution for Land Rover.  The vehicle is much lighter than the company’s other SUVs, features a more efficient engine, and openly embraces the next generation of technology to the point where it fully integrates with an iPhone. When I'm listening to the radio and I happen to hear a song come over the airwaves sung by Ringo Starr as a solo artist, I always say to myself, "He was really an underrated Beatle."

In other words, he's much better than he ever got credit for. That's sort of how I view Scion.

This is a brand that's not getting its proper notice. It's the Ringo of the Toyota trio. Everyone knows the star performers — Toyota and its rich sidekick, Lexus. And there's little Scion, a Johnny-come-lately, strumming away in the background with its three-car lineup.

As I spent time this week in the 2009 Scion xB, with a base price of $16,700, I kept thinking of all the different types of people who would get enjoyment from ownership of this five-door car. Tops on my list are older folks who need a functional utility-type car that is easy on the knees.

The xB is box-shaped like a sport-utility vehicle, yet it is more user-friendly with its low-to-the-ground entry/exit status. The xB has a ground clearance of 5 inches, whereas most SUVs have 8 to 9 inches of ground clearance.

The xB offers a cavernous interior with five-passenger seating capacity. Cargo volume when the second row is folded is nearly 70 cubic feet.

Scion describes its xB interior as lounge-like. The driver has a right-side armrest and the seats recline fully, not only for cargo space but also for a roadside rest. Adding to the flexible functionality is the array of interior storage units.

I wasn't expecting much in the area of performance, but there I go, underrating the Scion. I stepped on the accelerator and was really pleased with the smooth, linear response from the electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission as it seamlessly and quietly moved through the gears.

Contributing to the smooth ride is the MacPherson suspension system up front.

The xB is quite easy to maneuver with a curb-to-curb turning circle of 35 feet. The xB rides on standard 16-inch steel wheels.

The engine breathes so well, allowing all of its 2.4-liter four-cylinder capability to be enabled. Variable Valve Timing with intelligence is the key to better performance, as well as the lightweight aluminum alloys used in the engine block and head.

The four-cylinder in the 2009 Scion has 55 more horsepower than the previous generation. The new xB has 158 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 162 pounds-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm. The xB is offered in both 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic; and both transmissions get the same EPA estimated fuel consumption of 22 miles per gallon city and 28 mpg highway.

Scion iQ Mini Car to Arrive in U.S. in Late 2010

First shown as a concept (above) at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, Scion will reportedly bring the iQ to market by the Fall of 2010.

After receiving an excellent reception at the show, Scion's VP, Jack Hollis has said he is fighting to get the car to market. One large Toyota dealer has however, spilled the beans, telling the folks at AutoWeek that an agreement has been reached to bring the diminutive car to the U.S.

At a length of just 117.5-inches, the iQ is only slightly larger than a SMART fortwo. Unlike the SMART, however, the iQ can fit three adults and a child… at least that's what Scion says. Taking a look at the car, however, it appears as though seating for two is about all there's room for.

While several engine options are available in Europe the iQ will most likely get the largest (1.3-liter four-cylinder) when it debuts in the U.S. That engine makes 99hp and gets 66 mpg.

Scion is a company desperate to reinvent itself, as its popularity is based as much on fresh product as it is on customizing that product. "Scion is a good business mode that will be valuable and viable in the future, but for the business model to be successful, product freshness is key," said Toyota North America president and COO Yoshi Inaba. And fresh-product isn't something Scion has much of. Currently the company is working on a replacement to the tC coupe while the iconic Scion, the xB, is already starting to lose out to new models like the Kia Soul.

Record sales greet third-generation Prius

Toyota's Prius has set an all-time sales record in Australia just two weeks after the launch of a new-generation car.

A total of 446 customers bought a Prius in July – more than 60 ahead of the previous record set in May 2007.

All-new third-generation Prius was launched on July 20.

It is Australia's greenest car, using less fuel around town and producing fewer emissions than any other vehicle on the market.

The latest figures indicate the growing popularity of vehicles that are viewed as environmentally friendly – and not just in Australia.

In Japan, Prius was the best-selling car in May and repeated the feat in June with sales doubling to more than 22,000 for the month.

Around the world, total Prius sales have now exceeded 1.3 million globally, including 13,300 in Australia.

Including Prius, Toyota has sold more than 1.9 million hybrid vehicles and expects to pass the two-million mark before the end of the year.

Australian NASCAR driver Marcos Ambrose has staked his claim as a star of the sport following a win and second place in his Toyota Camry at the famous Watkins Glen road course circuit in New York.

Ambrose won the second-tier Nationwide race on the weekend before finishing in a career-best second place this morning (Australian time) in the rain-delayed Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen, the former home of the US Grand Prix.

His Nationwide win came after he executed a late pass on Toyota stable mate Kyle Busch into the ‘Bus Stop' turn with 18 laps remaining.

Busch held onto second place to claim his 10th-consecutive top-two finish and ensure another Camry 1-2.

"Here we are in Victory Lane. It's just awesome," Ambrose said.

"I had to surprise him (Kyle Busch). I didn't have the straight line speed to really attack him. If I had waited for the last 10 laps there is no way he would have let me past so I just tried to surprise him and I even surprised myself!

"It was an all-in move and I knew I had to do it then because the element of surprise was there and that's what got the win for us."

The two-time V8 Supercar Champion proved fast all weekend – topping two Cup practice sessions and eventually qualifying fourth for the main race.

Ambrose finished less than three seconds behind points leader, and race-winner, Tony Stewart, and although pleased with his efforts he and the team gambled on strategy early in the race in the hope it may have led to victory.

He was one of only three cars that did not pit during the first caution period of the 90-lap race.

The move gave him track position early, but he had to fight back through the field as his strategy forced him to pit out of sequence with the rest of the field and under green flag conditions.

"It's just a great weekend for us," Ambrose said after the Cup race. "We didn't quite have enough to get Tony (Stewart) there in the end but I threw everything I could at him.

"We got off strategy for some reason, just with the way the race rolled for us. We got stuck in the back of the pack and had to make a gamble."

Toyota had four Camrys in the top 10 with Busch again finishing behind Ambrose in fourth place, while former Formula 1 pilot Max Papis earned his best Cup result with eighth, two places ahead of Denny Hamlin in 10th.

Toyota celebrates 10 years of growth with National Tree Day Toyota Australia this year celebrates its 10th consecutive year of support for Planet Ark's Schools and National Tree Day, a proud and continued commitment to doing its bit for the environment in this climate conscious age.

Chief Executive Officer of Planet Ark, Sean Barrett said that Toyota should be commended for its role in helping rally more than two million volunteers over the last decade to get their green hands dirty and plant a tree on National Tree Day.

Toyota plans to grow Scion lineup

When Toyota Motor Corp. created the Scion brand, its objective was to attract trendy young customers with a separate lineup of edgy-yet-affordable models.

But with only three vehicles in the Scion range, the 6-year-old brand already is losing its freshness.

The solution, says Toyota’s new U.S. sales chief, is to expand the lineup so that there’s always something new and exciting.

“For the Scion business model, product freshness is key,” said Yoshimi Inaba, chairman and CEO of Toyota Motor Sales USA as well as president of Toyota Motor America, on a recent visit to Detroit. With its no-haggle pricing policy, Scion has few other levers to increase sales, which are down 60 percent this year, more than Toyota’s overall 38 percent drop.

“One of my jobs is to revive the Scion spirit in the United States,” said Inaba, who was the driving force behind the brand during his last stint in the nation. One likely addition to the Scion lineup is the iQ, a minicar that Toyota sells in Europe and Japan under the Toyota brand.

Scion exists only in the United States. Earlier this year, Toyota displayed a Scion-badged iQ in New York, but the company has not confirmed plans to market such a car in the United States.

Speculation is rife that Toyota might add a gas-electric hybrid car to the Scion lineup. But company spokesman Irv Miller said Toyota would have to consider the cost of fitting a hybrid powertrain into an inexpensive and already fuel-efficient car. Starting prices for Scion models range from $14,800 to $17,000, although buyers tend to spend more to customize their vehicles.

Toyota is now reviewing all of its vehicle lines in the United States, as well as its operations, after losing money in the region. As it assesses Scion, Toyota must decide whether it is content to sell cars to young people by offering inexpensive models, or whether the brand retains its original mandate, to attract young trendsetters who will dial up Toyota’s coolness factor. If the goal is to attract young, leading-edge buyers, then “you have to, like Inaba’s saying, keep everything fresh,” said Wesley Brown at Los Angeles-based consulting firm Iceology. “But keeping things fresh isn’t as easy as we all think on the outside that it should be,” he said.

It’s particularly tough in the auto industry “because of the gestation period, and the money and risk involved with a new product.” Scion hit the mark in 2003 when it rolled out the first xB, a boxy model from its Japanese lineup that didn’t resemble anything on American roads. But the xB’s success led Toyota to take the safe route when it came time to replace the vehicle.

Toyota produced a bigger, more conservative version of the xB. Brown says Toyota was right to produce that vehicle — but it should have marketed it under the Toyota brand, where it would have attracted more customers. Meanwhile, the space once occupied by the first xB is being filled by edgy new offerings such as the Nissan Cube and Kia Soul. Toyota has many models in its Japanese and European model ranges that could be turned into Scion vehicles at little cost, Brown said. In his view, the hatchback version of the Yaris should have gone into the Scion lineup, with only the staid sedan going to the Toyota range where people expect something solidly

Toyota Launches "Cash for Clunkers" Program and Advertising...

Toyota will begin airing national and regional television commercials today in support of the government's Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) by informing consumers that the Toyota family of cars and trucks has 25 models that qualify for federal rebates ranging from $3,500 to $4,500.

The program, better know as "Cash for Clunkers," begins today and will run through Nov. 1, or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first. Consumers can access the program's official guidelines by going to cars.gov.

All Toyota and Scion passenger cars and most Toyota trucks, vans and SUVs are eligible for government incentives under the program. In addition, some Lexus models also qualify.

Regionally, consumers can apply their CARS rebates toward special 60-month leases on Yaris, Corolla, Camry (non-hybrid), RAV4 SUV and Tacoma pickup. Since rates will vary by region, information is being posted on buyatoyota.com so consumers can learn which lease specials are available in their area. The special leases are only available to customers participating in the CARS program. Consumers not receiving government incentives can take advantage other regional offers, including low APRs and cash rebates.

"We appreciate the effort by the U.S. Congress to pass 'Cash for Clunkers,' which

"It will help consumers dispose of older high-emissions, less fuel efficient vehicles and replace them with new, more fuel efficient cars and trucks."

Consumers can see which Toyota (toyota.com), Lexus (lexus.com) and Scion (scion.com) models are eligible by going to http://www.toyota.com/cashforclunkers. The site will also allow visitors to calculate the amount of federal funds they are likely to receive based on the vehicle they turn in and which car, truck, van or SUV from the Toyota family they plan to buy or lease. In addition to government cash, Toyota customers are also eligible for any additional dealer incentives in effect, which vary by region.

Toyota's 30-second commercials will be seen nationally on CBS, FOX, NBC, ESPN, TNT, USA, ABC Family, A&E, Discovery, History, Travel and Syfy. Spanish language versions will run on Univision, Telemundo and Telefutura. The spots, which show a car being crushed, identify Toyota as a participant in the CARS program, as well as America's most dependable and fuel efficient car company. Viewers will also be reminded of available government vouchers up to $4,500, plus any regional incentives Toyota offers.

Toyota CARS-related ads can also be seen on such leading websites as Edmunds.com and cars.com.

In addition to television, regional advertising will include newspapers and radio. Consumers will be told they can use CARS cash to buy or lease select Toyota vehicles.

To celebrate the new campaign today, two innovative and engaging microsites that will attract a youthful trend-leading audience to the Scion brand will go live. The first of two sites, Pixel Reveal (www.ScionReveal.com), invites visitors to register to win a highly customized one-of-a-kind Scion worth over $34,000. A few items on the lengthy list of parts and modifications found on this car include a custom paint job, performance air intake, rear spoiler and a set of 19-inch wheels.

Registrants can visit the site up to ten times a day, with each visit revealing more pixels that together produce a complete image of the grand prize car. The registrant that reveals the last pixel of the one-million pixel image will win the car.

"With each one of its many accessories and custom modifications, this one-of-a-kind Scion truly defines the brand's philosophy of personalization through customization," said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president. The second microsite, entitled Speechifier (www.BecomeNoneOfUs.com), engages visitors to create their own personal manifesto with an inventive twist. Users can then embed their personal manifesto video into their favorite social media sites for their peers to experience.

Tanner Foust Slides the Rockstar Energy Scion tC to Victory at Round...

Scion-supported Formula DRIFT driver Tanner Foust, who debuted the Papadakis Racing-built Rockstar Energy Drink Scion tC at the season opener with a third place victory, jumped onto the Formula DRIFT podium's top spot scoring a victory this past weekend at Round 4 in Las Vegas.

"The Rockstar team and I went from zero to hero after failing to qualify for the main competition last event," said Formula DRIFT champion Tanner Foust. "I am so proud of my team. They worked hard to fix the issues of the Rockstar Scion tC, and I now feel comfortable and feel that this car has more potential than it's ever had."

Despite Las Vegas' sweltering 105-degree temperature, Foust drove his Scion tC through the competitive "Top 32" ladder of top-level drivers before finally knocking out Ryuji Miki in the final round.

"Tanner's win in the Rockstar Scion tC is a huge accomplishment for the team and everyone involved," said team manager and car builder Stephan Papadakis. "With this being only our fourth event in the tC, it just shows the dedication and drive to win for the whole Scion team.”

The win earned Foust 100 points in the Formula DRIFT series, and he now sits in eighth place, just 61 points away from the current points-leader. With three rounds remaining, Foust and the rest of the Papadakis Racing team look forward to Round 5 with confidence.

"It's an unbelievable sight to see a Scion tC tearing it up on the course and an incredible feeling to have one take home a victory," said Steve Hatanaka, Scion's auto show and special events manager. "With both teams gaining momentum and confidence, we hope it's only a matter of time before Scion is victorious again."

Scion-backed Formula DRIFT driver Ken Gushi arrived in Las Vegas with confidence stemming from his Round 3 fourth-place finish in New Jersey. During qualifying, Gushi, in the RS-R Scion tC, impressed the crowd and the judges with his fast entries and aggressive transitions, earning him a spot in the "Top 32" round of tandem battles.

Pit up against Tyler McQuarrie in the first battle, Gushi put up an aggressive fight that had to be settled in a "One More Time" second battle. During the "One More Time" battle, Gushi applied great pressure as he chased McQuarrie through the course but fell victim to a round-ending spin.

"We came to Las Vegas ready for anything," said Gushi. "The track was hotter than usual, but the tC ran phenomenal and I'm definitely feeling in sync with the car. We're going to make a few changes to the tC and I look forward to the next battle in Seattle."

Gains to fuel-efficiency, style, features and value are the highlights of upgrades to Toyota’s top-selling Camry (Sportivo model shown).

Toyota has improved the fuel-efficiency, styling, features and value of its top-selling Camry.

The big news is better fuel economy for automatic models – improved by more than 11 per cent to just 8.8 litres/100km on the official combined cycle.

The lower fuel use has been achieved by improvements to the five-speed automatic transmission and the 2.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

Camry has been Australia’s best-selling mid-size car for the past 15 years – and is set to add to that record in 2009.

The latest enhancements include a newly designed grille and front bumper, larger lower intake, larger headlamps and restyled tail lamps with LEDs.

All Camry models now have six airbags.

The improvements, along with revised prices – some of which are the same or lower – have increased the overall value represented by Camry.

Toyota-backed researchers have unveiled technology that allows a person to use thoughts to operate a wheelchair.

People can now use their brain instead of their voice or muscles to steer a wheelchair.

Toyota is involved in developing technology that interprets brain waves to enable a wheelchair to move forwards and turn left or right almost instantly.

The system, developed in collaboration with researchers in Japan, is among the fastest in the world for analysing brain waves.

Past systems required several seconds to read brain waves, but the new technology takes just 125 milliseconds – or one-eighth of a second.

The person in the wheelchair wears a cap with electrodes that reads brain signals and relays them to a scanner that analyses them.

The system can adapt quickly to the characteristics and commands of different drivers with an accuracy rate of 95 per cent.

This technology is expected to be useful in the field of rehabilitation and for physical and psychological support of wheelchair drivers.

Research into personal mobility is part of Toyota's long-term strategy of helping to make people healthy and comfortable in ways that go beyond cars.

Toyota Scion has set forth its new "brand manifesto." Targeting young, urban consumers the brand has debuted new TV, print and outdoor advertising, as well as a pair of promotional microsites, which went live on Thursday.

The subcompact five-door Scion xD subcompact is being promoted in new ad dubbed "xD Explosion," which began airing on July 4. The xD advertisements feature the taglines "Stand with us by standing out," and "Create a following by never following."  Attik is the agency.

The sports coupe Scion tC sports coupe, will be advertised in the upcoming "Streaks" spot which features the more energized tagline "Tear it up, don't rip it off." The third model, the urban utility Scion xB "urban utility" vehicle, is being tagged, "Be an original, not a copy."

"With this new brand manifesto campaign, we set out to re-introduce Scion to young, urban consumers by reinforcing the company's unique position as an authentic brand that is all about creativity and individuality," said Attik co-founder and creative director Simon Needham, in a statement.

The new ads will have strong online support thanks to two new microsites. Pixel Reveal (www.scionreveal.com), features an image obscured by a million pixels. Visitors who register can remove up to 10 pixels a day every day until all of the million pixels have been removed, revealing the grand prize Scion. Speechifier, the second site (www.becomenoneofus.com) give visitors the chance to enter their own manifestos and have the online program turn it into a customized video.

Toyota Motor Sales spent $18 million on media behind Scion in 2008 and $7 million through May 2009, per Nielsen.

New Prius sets Environmental and Performance Standards

Toyota has reinvented the Prius petrol-electric hybrid car, releasing a third-generation model range that sets new standards for environmental and driving performance.

In almost every respect, Toyota has fine-tuned and refined new Prius to provide a substantial step-up and expand the gap over the competition.

Styling is fresh, but unmistakably Prius, while the interior is slightly larger and the car contains features and options commonly found in premium cars.

The Hybrid Synergy Drive system mates a bigger and more powerful petrol engine with a stronger electric motor.

As a result, Prius is quicker off the mark while delivering better fuel economy than its predecessor.

It is the cleanest production car sold in Australia with CO2 emissions of 89 grams/km – the only vehicle on the local market under 100g.

Fuel consumption has been improved by more than 11.3 per cent to 3.9 litres per 100km (official combined cycle). City cycle is also 3.9 and highway cycle is 3.7 litres/100km.

Maximum combined power from the hybrid system has been boosted more than 21 per cent to 100kW.

Contrary to conventional wisdom, the larger petrol engine helps improve fuel economy with the added torque providing more efficient highway operation and improved uphill performance.

Every new Prius gains several new technologies that improve safety by providing “at-a-glance” information, reducing driver eye movement for better concentration on the road.

A Head-Up Display provides speed and other information on the windscreen in the driver's line of sight.

When the driver touches the audio or information controls on the steering-wheel hub, Toyota's world-first Touch Tracer system displays a duplicate read-out on the instrument panel.

A Multi-Information Display monitors fuel and energy consumption, providing feedback that helps the driver acquire economical driving habits.

All Prius models are fitted with seven airbags – two front, two side (front), two curtain-shield (full-length) and one protecting the driver's knee.

Stability and traction control, active front head restraints and anti-skid brakes are also standard.

Another innovation is ecological plastic – the world's first automotive use of injection-moulded material derived from plants. Used in several locations throughout new Prius including the driver's seat cushion, the plastic emits less CO2 during its lifecycle than materials derived from petroleum.

Toyota Australia's senior executive director sales and marketing David Buttner said the new Prius will appeal to a wider group of owners by using even less fuel, while meeting customer expectations for better performance.

“It projects a style that is more mainstream while being unmistakably Prius,” Mr Buttner said.

“It will satisfy the varied demands of many customers – whether their priority is a car with ultra-low emissions, excellent city and highway performance, economy of operation, or more space for their families and luggage.”

Prius Plant uses Hybrid Power, too!

The Prius production plant in Japan has grass growing on the roof, and uses solar panels to generate power and special paint to clean the air.

Known as Tsutsumi, the factory in Aichi has been designated a model plant by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) for promoting sustainability initiatives.

By continuously implementing new measures, the plant's overall CO2 emissions have been cut by more than 50 per cent since 1990.

This has reduced annual emissions by more than 150,000 tonnes - roughly equivalent to the volume of CO2 absorbed each year by a 5,040-hectare tropical rainforest.

Last year, Toyota installed 50,000 square metres of photovoltaic solar panels at Tsutsumi, equivalent in size to more than 60 tennis courts.

The total output of the panels is 2000kW, which is equal to the average consumption of 500 households.

This reduces the plant's carbon dioxide emissions by 740 tonnes per year, effectively saving 2,500 drums of oil (one drum is 200 litres).

Half of the electricity from the assembly plant comes from the solar panels, while the remaining half is produced by gas co-generation.

This means both Prius and the Tsutsumi plant use hybrid power.

The assembly plant exterior - an area of 22,000 square metres - is now covered in photo-catalytic paint, which breaks down airborne nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulfur oxides (SOx).

This has the same effect as planting 2000 trees, cleaning the air by producing oxygen in sunlight.

As part of the plan to offset CO2 emissions, 50,000 trees were planted at and around the factory in 2008.

TMC's goal was to create a production site that could serve as a lush and diverse habitat for various living creatures.

In addition to planting trees, TMC is applying its biotechnology and afforestation know-how through activities such as greening the Tsutsumi plant's rooftops with NOx-absorbing vegetation.

Since Prius production began in 1997, the plant has reduced the amount of waste going to landfill by 82 per cent and has instituted plans to achieve complete elimination of incinerated waste.

Comprehensive water recycling programs have led to a 50 per cent reduction in water discharge to the local river system.

The discharged water is five times cleaner than the river itself.

The plant uses energy-saving lights, and daylight coming through windows in the roof is channelled to provide more lighting.

Using sunlight in this way reduces electricity consumption by 2kWh per day and cuts CO2 by 220kg or 110,000 litres a year.

An "eco-point program" at the plant enables employees to earn rewards by voluntarily planning and holding environment-related events or by taking it upon themselves to come up with and adopt eco-minded practices.

Tsutsumi is also regarded as Toyota's "mother" plant, supporting plants in other countries in product quality, production, information, maintenance and cost reduction.

Toyota is recalling 1,348 Scions and Toyotas, including some mom-mobiles, from the 2009 and 2010 model years, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The following models are part of the recall: the 2009 Scion tC and xB, the 2009 Toyota Highlander, RAV4, Sienna, Tacoma and Yaris, and the 2009 and 2010 Tundra.

These models are missing load-carrying capacity modification labels, and that fails to conform with federal requirements. Without the label, owners could overload their vehicles, which would increase the risk of a crash.
